Why “Hone” A Honed Stone?

Natural stone is now one of the most commonly utilized components in affluent home design. The most frequently used stone in the Valley is honed travertine. “Honed” refers to a semi-gloss or less than full-polished luster. This “old world” or “tuscan” appearance of honed travertine is perfect for most southwest designs because travertine comes in a variety of colors and tile finish options. Although many travertine installations look beautiful from day one, with some after market work these surfaces can look even better. Re-honed and sealed natural stone floors are substantially superior to “sealed-only” floors because: …They look better! The surfaces display a cleaner, more consistent satin finish. This is the appearance most owners envisioned for their natural stone installation. Scratches, residue, blemishes and wear caused by manufacturing, transporting and constructing are all removed and a brand new surface is attained….They feel better! The minor abrasive process eliminates minor surface roughness as well as slightly lessening sharp tile edges. The surfaces have a much softer feel to bare and stocking feet….They are easier to maintain! With light scratches and factory residues removed, a smoother finish with tighter pores is achieved. This allows brooms, dust mops, vacuum cleaners and wet mops to glide effortlessly while removing all debris. Also, with tighter pores, spilled items will not penetrate or stick as easily; clean-up is simple….They are less expensive! The smooth, consistent finish substantially reduces housekeeping labor and supply costs. Moreover, when professional maintenance is needed, only the traffic areas will require attention. Once floors are honed and sealed, only worn areas are re-honed to blend in. “Sealed only” floors will require restorative work everywhere to achieve a uniform look. Counting labor and material, cost to move furniture, deep scratch removal and working around occupant’s schedules, restoration expenses of a “sealed only” floor mount. The Honing Process All non-stone surfaces are protected. Stone surfaces are cleaned and detailed of dirt, grout haze and debris. Wet abrasives are worked with heavy floor machines, and the slurry is vacuumed away. Edges are done with small handheld systems to allow for control around walls, cabinets and adjacent surfaces. Travertine, limestone and marble all have diverse densities, so various abrasives are used to achieve the desired look. Two coats of the highest grade penetrating sealer are flooded onto the surfaces to ensure that grout and the most porous areas are well sealed. Excess sealer is removed and a special buffing process creates a consistent stone finish.
